What is blue topaz?
Blue topaz starts out as a colorless white topaz, and is then heated and irradiated to achieve a beautiful blue color. Blue topaz can vary from a light blue to an intense deep blue color. Light blue topaz is called sky blue topaz, a medium blue is Swiss blue topaz, and a rich dark blue is London blue topaz. Only extremely pale blue topaz occurs naturally, which is very rare. The color treatment of blue topaz is stable and permanent, it will not fade over time. Blue topaz has a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, making it a durable gemstone that can tolerate daily wear. Blue topaz is commonly used as the birthstone for December, as well as zircon, turquoise, and tanzanite.
